Algebra
Let be an even integer. A regular -gon and a regular -gon are inscribed into the unit circle. For each vertex of the -gon consider the distance from this vertex to the nearest vertex of the -gon, measured along the circumference. Let be the sum of these distances. Prove that depends only on , and not on the relative position of the two polygons.

Solution
Solution: For simplicity, take the length of the circle to be rather than . The vertices of the -gon divide it into arcs of length . By the pigeonhole principle, some two of the vertices of the -gon lie in the same arc. Assume w.l.o.g. that and lie in the arc , with closer to and closer to , and that .
Consider the circle as the segment of the real line, with both of its endpoints identified with the vertex and the numbers identified accordingly with the vertices
For , let be the "coordinate" of the vertex of the -gon. Each arc has length . By the choice of labelling, we have
and, moreover, . Hence .
Clearly, for . It is not hard to see that if , and if . These inequalities are verified immediately by inserting and taking into account that .
Summing up, we have:
-
if , then lies between and , closer to ; recalling that has "coordinate" , we see that the distance in question is equal to ;
-
if , then lies between and , closer to ; the distance in question is equal to ;
-
for , the distance in question is .
The sum of these distances evaluates to
Note that here appears half of the times with a plus sign and half of the times with a minus sign. Thus, eventually, all terms cancel out, and the value of does not depend on anything but .
