Kombinatoorika
For a positive integer , consider all nonincreasing functions . Some of them have a fixed point (i.e. a such that ), some do not. Determine the difference between the sizes of the two sets of functions.
Remark. A function is nonincreasing if holds for all .

Lemma. Let be a set of consecutive integers and let be a set of consecutive integers. There are exactly nonincreasing functions . Proof. Let (wlog) , . A function is nonincreasing if and only if the function given by is strictly decreasing. Any such function is uniquely identified with the set of its values ; and the latter has size . So there are as many functions in question as there are -element subsets of ; the lemma is ready.
Now we count the functions of the two types under consideration. A function that has a fixed-point maps (nonincreasingly) into , and it maps (nonincreasingly) into ; and there are no further restrictions. So, on the left side of , we have (by the lemma with ) choices; and right to (again by the lemma, with ) we have also choices. The number of nonincreasing functions with a fixed-point is therefore equal to
If has no fixed-point then there exists such that for and for . A similar reasoning applies: maps into and it maps into (arbitrarily nonincreasingly). On the left piece (lemma with ) there are choices; on the right piece (lemma, ) choices. So the number of nonincreasing functions without a fixed-point equals
Consider the polynomial . We recognize and as the coefficients of and in the product . Thus and , with the difference . (This gets us another characterization of Catalan numbers.)
