Solution: Studying the graphs of the functions and it is easy to see that the equation always has one solution if and can have , or solutions if . Moreover, in the case the number of solutions can only decrease as increases and we have exactly one positive value of for which the equation has one solution - this is the case when the graphs of and are tangent to each other, i.e., there exists such that and . From these two equations we get and . Summarizing: the equation has one solution for and , two solutions for and no solutions for .
